John is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. He got his start in the local music scene playing in Brick, a garage band. His next step was joining Skyport, playing the local Cleveland club scene. Eventually the band became Stairway, followed by Love Affair, which was one of the top draws in northeast Ohio in the 1970-80’s. They played several major venues, including the Agora chain which took them to Florida and Texas. In the late 1970s, they released the self-titled Love Affair, which included the single Mama Sez, which received national attention. The band toured throughout the U.S. and Canada, sharing stages with major performers including Dr. Hook, Pat Benatar, Huey Lewis and the News, Cheap Trick, AC/DC, and ZZ Top

John is credited for coming up with the concept for Across the Universe.
